GUEST SPEAKERS

California Assembly Member Jared Huffman

Elected to the Assembly in November 2006, Assembly Member Jared Huffman has quickly earned respect as a legislator who tackles complex public policy challenges, works tirelessly, and gets results - often by forging consensus on seemingly intractable issues. In his first two years, Huffman was among the state's most prolific lawmakers, passing 28 pieces of legislation.

Huffman's priorities include protecting our environment; fighting global warming while creating jobs and building a "clean and green" 21st century economy; promoting sustainable water, land use and transportation policies; revitalizing public education; and reforming our broken health care system.

Prior to his election, he was a Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Prior to joining NRDC, Huffman was a successful public interest attorney in private practice. His court victories included several major jury verdicts in gender discrimination and race discrimination trials, and a historic case on behalf of the National Organization for Women.

Judy's father was an attorney in Kansas City, who would have been in the foreign service but for an emergency appendectomy at American University, followed by recovery and a return to college in Kansas. He has probably been the biggest influence on Judy's interest in government.

She then worked for the Peace Corps in Washington D.C. when Sergeant Shriver was its head, and John Kennedy was President. When Judy came to Marin in 1966, she knew this was where she wanted to be. Judy has lived in Novato for eighteen years, and can't imagine living anywhere else.

Prior to her election as Marin County Supervisor, District 5, She workd as District Chief of Staff for Carole Migden, California State Senate District Coordinator for President pro Tempore John Burton, California State Senate, Director of Communication & Fund Development, Goodwill Industries of the Redwood Empire, Marin County's First Supervisorial Aide (Gary Giacomini), Publicist Marin Transit Systems, Inc. and Journalist, U.S. Peace Corps.
